Pelhams & Kimblewicks

The Pelham has attachments for two reins, one near the mouthpiece and one at the end of the shank. These reins have similar action to the curb and bradoon reins in the double bridle. Depending on your discipline, you may prefer to use 'rounding’s' in order only one rein is required. However, this does compromise the effectiveness of the cheekpieces.

The Kimblewick works in a similar way to a Pelham. It can be ridden with two reins and the use of a curb chain puts additional pressure on the horse’s poll. However, the lever action is considerably less due to the shorter D-Ring shaped cheeks, resulting in less pressure.
