02 Comfort Snaffle

This mouthpiece is the Myler version of a French Link, but the barrel prevents the tongue getting caught in the joint and also limits the collapse, so it doesn’t 'nutcracker' on the bars and outer lips like most double-jointed mouthpieces.  There is no port.

 The 02 acts on the tongue and the corners of the bars, and gently wraps the outer lips and bars.  It is particularly suited to a young horse, learning to bend and balance.

See also the 04, which is also dressage-legal.  The 04 acts in exactly the same way as the 02, but it has a small port for tongue room,

The 02 has Myler's special Independent Side Movement, for a clearer lateral aid.

The 02 mouthpiece on a Loose Ring is made of Sweet Iron which will corrode gradually over time, giving a sweet taste that will encourage salivation.   (see the Information Sheet on Sweet Iron Bits on the Bitting Information tab.)

Loose Ring Cheek

The mouthpiece on a loose ring slips down around the cheek rings, following gravity to rest on the tongue, but this will also angle the port forwards, creating tongue room.

 The reins on a Loose Ring will slide up the cheek ring to make a straight line between the bit and the rider’s hands. This minimises any leverage, and the action goes directly from the rider’s hands to the bit, pulling the mouthpiece back against the tongue.

 The Loose Ring is the cheek which offers the least downward rotation of the mouthpiece, so it can be a good choice for a horse that doesn’t need or doesn’t respond well to downward pressure.
